Connection Between Arterial Pressure and Arteriolar Diameter Captured by UWF SS-OCTA

Research recently published in <Ophthalmology Science> investigated the metrics of retinal arterioles and venules based on the en face images of the superficial retina using UWF SS-OCTA and assessed their relationships with specific systemic parameters in a normal sample.

Retinal arterioles and venules were manually segmented and distinguished from the disc margin based on 24mm x 20mm superficial retinal OCTA images. ACartery (averaged caliber of retinal artery) and ACvein (averaged caliber of retinal vein) were calculated separately according to vessel density and skeletonized vessel density of artery and vein. The results revealed a significant negative impact of real-time mean arterial pressure (MAP) on averaged vessel caliber, especially ACartery, indicating that retinal arteriolar caliber is capable of predicting real-time systolic blood pressure.

A 400kHz speed swept source OCTA (BMizar, TowardPi Medical) was used in this study to achieve high-resolution ultrawide-field OCTA images with precise and automatic segmentation algorithm.
